Recover Deleted Folders in Outlook — Step-by-Step Guide

Accidentally deleted a folder in Outlook? Whether it was a single email folder, an entire archive subfolder, or a folder with years of organized mail, Outlook has multiple recovery paths depending on your account type.

Recover from Deleted Items Folder

When you delete a folder in Outlook, it moves to the Deleted Items folder along with all its contents. Right-click the Deleted Items folder → "Recover Deleted Items" or simply drag the folder back to where you want it. The folder and all emails inside are restored immediately.

Use "Recover Deleted Items from Server"

For Exchange and Microsoft 365 accounts, Outlook has a server-side recycle bin. Go to Folder → Recover Deleted Items from Server (in the toolbar). This shows emails and folders deleted within the retention period (usually 14–30 days), including items permanently deleted from the Deleted Items folder.

Recover from Outlook PST/OST File Backup

If you use a local PST or OST file, Outlook creates auto-backups. Check %localappdata%\Microsoft\Outlook for .bak or .pst files. Open the backup in Outlook (File → Open & Export → Open Outlook Data File) and drag the missing folder to your main mailbox.

Restore from Windows Previous Versions

Right-click your Documents folder or Outlook data file location, select Properties → Previous Versions. Windows Backup or Volume Shadow Copy may have a snapshot from before the deletion. Copy the old PST file to a safe location and open it in Outlook to access the restored folder.
