Is iforgot.apple.com the official Apple password reset page?

Yes. iforgot.apple.com is Apple's official self-service portal for resetting Apple ID passwords and starting Account Recovery. This guide is an independent third-party walkthrough — we explain how to use Apple's portal step-by-step, but the portal itself is owned and operated by Apple Inc.

Why does iforgot ask for a phone number I don't recognize?

Apple shows part of the trusted phone number on file so you can confirm it's still yours. If the partial number looks unfamiliar, your account may have been compromised — contact Apple Support directly at 1-800-275-2273 instead of continuing through the self-service flow.

What happens if I enter the wrong code several times?

Apple temporarily locks the verification path after multiple failed attempts. Wait at least 8 hours before trying again, or switch to a different verification method (email instead of SMS, or vice versa).

Can I use iforgot without a trusted device?

Yes, but only via the Account Recovery flow — which takes several days. The self-service password reset requires either a trusted phone number, a trusted email, or a code from a device already signed in to your Apple ID.

How long does the iforgot Account Recovery wait take?

Apple gives you an estimated time when you submit the request, usually between several days and two weeks. The exact length depends on how much information you can provide and Apple's internal fraud-prevention checks. The wait timer resets if you try to sign in repeatedly during the period.

Will iforgot delete any of my iCloud data?

No. The iforgot flow only resets how you sign in. Your iCloud photos, contacts, messages, notes, and device backups stay exactly where they are. You do not lose data by resetting your Apple ID password.
