Saved Over a File? How to Recover the Previous Version of a Word or Excel Document

Saving over a document rarely destroys the old contents: cloud version history (OneDrive, SharePoint, Google Drive, Dropbox), Office's built-in Version History, Windows Previous Versions, macOS Time Machine and Browse All Versions, and AutoRecover snapshots all keep restorable copies. And because Office writes a new file on save and replaces the original, the pre-save version usually becomes deleted data in freed space — recoverable with a disk scan if checked promptly.
